Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms OR Fluffy's Birthday Party

Saturday, December 18th
I wake up and my back is fucking killing me. Megan closed the spa last night and she's quitting her (shitty) second job and her last day is Saturday so she's gone in early to get everything wrapped up and her exit interview. I decide to clean up my garage a bit and get some work done around the house. The morning starts off with some eggs and breakfast sausage with a tall glass of simply grapefruit. Life isn't great, but it could be a lot worse.
We are all having a little chat about life, weekends and women as I move charcoal and my dads tools around the garage when suddenly my good buddeh u/fluffy_butternut tells everyone that regular women are not damaged enough for me to enjoy. Not only is this HIGHLY insulting to me, but it reflects poorly on Megan as well.
rewind to several months before
Mrs. Fluffy emailed the whole reddit gang and told us we are invited to a surprise birthday party for the big guy. She gave us instructions/time/place, etc and everything. She did a TON of work to plan this and it shows. I was under the gun at the courthouse with a trial and I wasn't able to commit to the event and all of us have stuff going on so the odds of anyone being able to make it were not good. However, I kept her email, and her cell number on a burner.
cut to present
Did he really go there? He really went there. It's fucking on like Donkey Kong. I pull out a burner and send a message to Mrs. Fluffy asking her if the plans are still the same. She tells me when he will be arriving at the venue and I tell her I'm gonna make a big fucking scene. She is ecstatic at this idea.
I grab my packed bag from the closet and jump in the F350. I grab two organic bean to bar 88% endangered species chocolate bars for Megan and I stop by her work. She's busy, so I leave the chocolate for her at her station. I give her co-worker a note to hand to her when she gets out.
"Dear Megan, out for revenge. Back tomorrow - Will."
I start driving to MSY and traffic down I-10 isn't bad for a saturday. I phone Delta on the way there and book tickets for the flight. The only thing available is MD88 service connecting in Laguardia. In First. Being no stranger to the slightly elevated service and highly elevated price business model, I book the flight. I'm a little early so I make my way to the nearly brand new Delta Sky Club at MSY. It's new, the gumbo is tasty, the wifi is fast. Life isn't bad. Until I get the phone call from Megan.
Me: Hi sweetie
Megan: what the fuck does "out for revenge mean?"
Me: It means I'm out for revenge. I gotta do some things.
Megan: What things? We're supposed to have dinner with my brother tomorrow night!
Me: Uh. It's a long story. How was your exit interview?
Megan: It was fine. I'm leaving early today.
Me: Did you go back to your station yet?
Megan: No
Me: You should stop there again before you leave.
Megan: Why?
The airport PA screeches boarding announcement for my flight.
Me: They're calling my flight. I gotta run.
Megan: Flight? What?
Me: Gotta hop. Buy potatoes. See you tomorrow night!
I hang up and hightail it for the gate. I pop in and see the pilots before we leave and ask them what are the odds we get 31 via the expressway today. He says he was just loading it into the box. I tell him the last time I did 31 via the expressway into LGA at the Delta Museum sim, it was not good. In fact it was the worst thing to hit new york since a bunch of muslims on a tuesday in September. He laughs.
The ride into LGA is smooth as the HMG STG delivery schedule. New York is WINDY as fuck today and bumpy. I peer out the window of the left side of the plane and I get a beautiful close up photo of the statue of liberty and Ellis island. Wait. We're supposed to get 31 via the expressway. We should be on the localizer for LGA runway 4. That puts us right over my aunts place in Bay Ridge looking at the Verazanno. We're not getting 31, they're probably going to take us up over central park, back over da bronx and then in via 22.
Sure enough, we land on 22 and I ask the pilots what happened and they said the winds shifted and they had to turn the airport around. Eh, no biggie. I've seen it once, I'll see it again. It's a great approach to fly and if you ever get to experience it, it's fucking magical.
We land at LGA a few minutes late and the weather is cold, crisp and windy. I have a short connection but I head to the LGA sky club in terminal D. Life is good. I crack the laptop and do some work and as I close the laptop as they call my flight I see the very beginnings of light snow. I'm from Louisiana. I've never seen snow before. This scares me. I walk to the gate and I board in group 1 and take my first class seat. The plane is half empty. I walk up and chat with the pilots and they tell me that with the snow we are going to deice with type 1 fluid and anti ice with type 4 fluid. We will be a little delayed. As I gaze out the window from my seat, it's snowing and blowing even more.
Ten minutes later, the boarding door closes and we start to push back. Conditions have worsened significantly. We can't see the next plane in front of us, things have turned into not quite whiteout but very concerning to this southern boy. The pilots tell us we are number 3 for the deicing truck and I gaze out onto the runway.
It's whiter than an Ohio MAGA rally.
Fuck me to tears.
We deice as I check the weather in Pittsburgh. Rain/Freezing rain/Snow/wintry mix. I've never driven in snow. Fuck. Pucker factor increasing. I pull out my burner and send a message to Mrs. Fluffy and tell her I'm at the deice pad and will be there soon. We have a bumpy ride all the way across Pennsylvania and land about 30 minutes late. Hertz has me in the presidents circle but there is not a single car with local plates.
I downgrade to a 2020 white Toyota Corolla since it's the only thing with PA plates on it and I hightail it to the venue. I talk to the waitstaff and tell them I'm crashing the party and ask them to get me a tray and a vest with a nametag. The staff is laughing their ass off at my idea. I message Mrs. Fluffy and she thinks the idea is HYSTERICAL. She can't wait. I tell her I'll be there at 645.
T minus 60 minutes until Fluffy Arrival
I've never been to this part of Pennsylvania. To be honest, I am a Philly guy. The people there are angry, drunken, profane and love cheese steaks. They're my kind of people. I've never been to a Sheetz or Primanti Brothers. However, fluffy tells me some stories about how he and his wife have a good time over at the meadows. I have NEVER been to a racino before, and ever since I was nearly arrested at Wynn Las Vegas - I've been a little scared. However, it's just down the road and as some of you know, I just came into a shit ton of money.
This is not going to end well.
I drive down interstate 79 and whip into the north parking garage at The Meadows.
My pre-packed bag has four days of clothes, underwear, socks and PJ's, two kruggerands and $10,000 in cash just in case i need to flee the country. I pull out the ten dimes and make my way into the racino. The Meadows is HUGE. I get past the security checkpoint and walk around and I don't see any table games. I see a large well appointed poker room and see two craps tables working at the other end of the hall. I have no idea what table limits or odds are.
I saunter up to the table.
Me: How's the temperature guys?
Degen1: Eh it's up and down.
Me: As long as it's not as cold as outside amirte?
Degen2: haha yeah yinz been outside today? freezing rain and that!
Me: I don't know these words but whatever.
The point is on 6.
I drop $10,000 on the table.
Me: Change only. Gimme 1 small and 9 thousands.
Pit Boss: do you have a players club card?
Me: never played here before, don't worry about it for now.
Pit Boss: Okay!
The dice come out, it hits jimmy hicks and the dealers pay out all the bets. I look at the table, the minimums are $5 and everyone has pass line and numbers. NOBODY has true odds. Fuck it. Time to show them how it's done.
I drop $10 on the pass line.
Dice are out. Point is four. I look up and down the table and nobody is making odds bets. I look down at my rack and drop $100 behind my bet.
Dice come out. Six hard.
Me: Hey pit boss! How much can I put behind the line?
Pit Boss: We'll let you go to 10x, so we can take $100 on your pass line. It looks like you got $100 there but we'd count it out and if you were over we'll give you the extra back.
Me: solid, thanks!
I look down at my watch. Fluffy is due to arrive at 1900hrs. I told Mrs. I would be there at 1845. It's 15 minutes to drive from the garage to the party which means I need to be on the highway at 1830 which means I need to be out of the casino and cashed out and walking to the garage by 1825. She sends me a message asking me where I'm at. I tell her I'm at the meadows and.....fuck it's 1821.
Fuck it. Go big or go home.
I take my pass line up to $500 and shove $5000 behind the line. Everyone at the table is looking at me funny. I give $2400 to the dealers and tell them to split me the 6/8.
Pit Boss: are you SURE you don't want a players club card?
Me: no time! throw them bones!
The whip slides the dice over to the fella next to me. He throws.
Dealer: Four hard, four the hard way, four.
Everyone at the table is looking at me funny. My $500 pass line bet has paid even money. The $5000 behind the line pays true odds on a 4, at 2:1. I look down at my watch. 1829. The dealers are stacking and distributing chips with a fervor.
Me: Take down my 6/8 and color me up.
Dealer: You got it boss!
As they color up my chips, I tell Mrs. fluffy I just won a ton of money at the meadows and I'm cashing out now. I take a $100 chip, hold it up and ask if the dealers want to play it or drop it
Dealer: It's up to you man, we don't mind.
I plant the chip down on the pass line and tell them put half on the pass line ferda boys, drop the other half. They all LITERALLY clap and thank me.
Me: One more thing, where's the cashier?
They point me to the cage with the aplomb of a new airport ramper. I leave the casino with a giant wad of cash bulging in my jeans. There's no line and they count out all my cash quickly. I look down at my watch as she's counting out the last of the small bills. 1835.
Fuck. I'm going to be late. I hate being late. I jog out to the north garage and hightail it back up interstate 79.
I have never driven in snow, at night, or for that matter driven in Pennsylvania before until now. It's snowing, it's dark, the speed limit is 55 and I am the SLOWEST guy in the right lane at 80 and people are passing me going WTF ARE YOU DOING GET OFF THE ROAD judging by the horns and the flashing headlights. I am HAULING ass back up to the venue and I park the Toyota in a handicapped spot as I race into the venue. I find Harriet, the party planner she hands me a vest with a nametag.
My transition from Will the gun dealer to Mario the waiter will completed as soon as he arrives. I get fluffy's favorite drink and a plate of some food set up on a tray and I hide in the back waiting for his arrival. Here's a photo.
As if it were choreographed to the minute, Mrs. Fluffy walks him in the front door at 7PM to a room full of people as a birthday surprise. He had not seen it coming. He begins making the rounds seeing everyone and saying hello. It's a big party so it takes some time. I hang back for a few minutes and let him do his thing and I give my phone to one of his friends and tell them to get this next part on video as I put on the vest and adjust the nametag.
Friendo: Sure thing "mario"
Me: shut up and just do some good camera work!
I take the tray of beverage and minature charcuterie plate over to fluffy as he's greeting the party guests and sneak up behind him. He's taking his grand old time working the room. In my best italian Pittsburgh native accent I can muster, I'm holding the tray and I walk in front of him and put on a great big smile.
Me: Can I get yinz something to drink? Or some charcuterie and that?
Fluffy: .......
(I now feign anger)
Fluffy: What.....are you.........doing here?
Me: Mrs told us about it and I figured I should give you a hard time after your comments this morning. Would you like some food? You know, airplane noises make the food taste better. Or are you a little too old for that? Lets give it a try!
(I grab a carrot stick and fly it into his face by making very loud airplane noises in a ballroom full of fluffy's closest friends and family making a gigantic scene with people wondering is this a joke or what horrors are about to come next. No, this is not a joke, this really happened. Ask anyone who was there.)
Fluffy: I'm good thanks
Me: you sure? (more airplane noises followed by a carrot slice raping his mouth)
Fluffy is shocked and awed. I tell him to go work the room and to have a happy birthday party. There's an open bar and I help myself to a double ginger ale, neat.
I find some millennials and we chat about Hawaiian shirts and stuff and they think my comedy is HILARIOUS. Unlike most of reddit. Fluffy saunters over and we chat some more and he's wondering WTF. I told him the wife planned it all months in advance.
Fluffy: You know u/xxxwirtydhorexxx is here.
Me: That's really funny.
Fluffy: No, he's really here.
Me: Bullshit. Then where is he?
Fluffy: He's right in front of you, 12 o'clock.
I don't see him. Then I look down and there's a guy in a boonie hat. I didn't recognize him without the dress.
Me: Oh dear god. He's really here isn't he?
Wirty gets up and walks over and he's like HI! I THOUGHT IT WAS YOU!
We have a bunch of really really awkward conversation that involves him inviting me to sit next to him and me running over to Mrs. Fluffy asking her to save me from wirty. She finds a spot at her table by her kids for me.
I forget his present, even though his wife said no presents and there's a table full of booze, scratchers, and gun stuff. I drive back up to the hotel to grab it and give it to him. He has no idea what it is. You all should ask him about it. I give it to him and Wirty starts complaining about normies.
Fluffy: Where are you staying?
Me: The Hilton just down the street
Fluffy: Oh, the one on the top of the hill?
Me: That's why it's the HILL-ton.
Everyone groans. Me and wirty talk and he weirds me out and demands to stand next to me in the group photo. I tell more jokes and the millenial group loves me. We close the place down and head back to fluffy's hotel.
BOY HOWDY LET ME TELL YOU.........if you thought MY stories were longwinded and pointless you have not met some of fluffy's friends! His local raconteur buddy was telling us at 145AM his story about being fucked by the Virginia state police for speeding. Yeah. I dump him off at his hotel and I head back up to my room. It's 3AM by the time I shower and sleep.
My alarm wakes me up at 9AM. My back is killing me. My head is pounding. It's 21 degrees outside. Fuck this noise. I go back to sleep.
The hotel phone rings.
Me: Go for Hayden
Operator: I have a fluffy butternut on the phone for you.
Me: Go ahead and connect us
Operator: Thank you
(sound of dial tone)
I'm not making this up. I grab my phone and call fluffy and we have brunch at the meadows with the mrs. It's fun, we talk guns, life, liberty and the pursuit of extra sides of marinara.
I hang out with them at the slot machines until it's time to head to the airport. I gas up at the sheetz next to the racetrack and I fly back home in coach since my status on delta is radioactive dirt. The incoming flight is late from Atlanta which means we leave late for Atlanta and i get back home 2.5 hours later than I expected.
Laundry is running and I am unpacking as Megan walks in the door.
Me: Hi!
Megan: Hi. Back from revenge so soon?
Me: Yeah. I'm actually late. How was dinner with your brother?
Megan: Good. He took me to olive garden. So tell me what was so important you had to go out for revenge and come back the next day?
(I tell her the story)
Megan: Wait a minute. Your friend insulted you as a joke, so you bought a last minute first class ticket to new york and pennsylvania to fly to his surprise birthday party to yell at him in person, in january in 21 degree weather?
Me: Yeah.
Megan: Why would you do that?
Me: Well he said that you're damaged goods. He wasn't insulting me, he was insulting you. I didn't like that.
Megan: You cannot be serious.
Me: I am serious.
Megan: and don't call you Shirley?
Me: You're weird.
Megan: I'm not the one that just flew across the country to go "out for revenge", and I'm the weird one?
Me: (goofy smile)
Megan: (goofy laughter)
Have a lovely holiday weekend everyone!

Room 1515: A search for an inception

Room 1515: The Search for an Inception.
Let’s get one thing straight: I knew exactly what I was doing when I came to this hotel. I’d heard through the rumor mill of a place like this for months now. Any writer or respectable artist lacking as much inspiration as me would be searching for a place like this like a lost social security card. Needless to say, I sought this place out to the best of my ability. I chased rumor after rumor, scrounging up old newspaper clippings, and investigating ‘disallowed’ texts from libraries left and right. I needed some sort of basis for my next story, something I could hopefully spin into a book.
I have been an artistic and mental dry well for months on end. So naturally when the moment came where I finally discovered my target location, I threw my belongings into a bag and hit the road. How could I pass up a place with only rumors and unverified documents identifying it as actually real, right? Precisely, I knew what I was doing when I came here. I knew the risks in both regards, if it wasn’t real and the terrifying possibility that it is. However, it’s clear I am not the only guest to this establishment it seems? No, this place is crawling with social outcasts (like myself), men in, just as you imagine cheesy detective attire, what appear to be ‘regulars’, and the honest to god vacationers. The problem with that last group is that I can’t even remotely begin to fathom what the appeal for this place is outside of experiencing a lovecraftian tale in reality. Maybe I am the only one, but the state of the unoccupied floor 15 left me disappointed, if not surprised.
I ordered my room in a very cautious and deliberate manner, that meaning that I intentionally chose an isolated floor from the rest of my fellow patrons. The hallway leading to my room was nothing short of below expectations. The walls were an awkward beige color with the occasional dark spots, and the walls smelled of some kind of mold. The carpeting was clearly done in a hurry, and showed signs of age of the years, with torn seams and definitely not up to standard patch jobs. To me, the state of this place was peculiar considering the divided rumors of the hotel itself. There is obviously no correct answer here, but the locals seem to be positively spot on two schools of thought. Some argue that this hotel has only been here for a few days, which would really be alarming for the immense history and overall aged appearance of just this hallway.
Another group would say that this place has been a scourge on this land for generations, and that the origin is shrouded in uncertainty, simply it has been here for as long as they can remember. No matter the origin, nothing could have prepared me for the state of the room and for the fact that it was breathtaking. The overwhelming contrast from the hallway immediately became apparent by manor solely of the door to 1515 itself. The handle was encrusted with a fine golden material that formed a shape of a lion's head on the center of the lock. When I took my first step into the room, my nostrils were invaded by cleaning products, which matched the well kept appearance of the room itself.
The bed was tucked properly and layered with decorative pillows and the sheets were made of fine quality material fit for a king. Speaking of being fit for a king, parts of the interior were littered with paintings that oozed medieval and renaissance era style. The bathroom was neatly compact, stuffed with products and a grand bathtub. The mirror of the bathroom spoke to me the most however, it was pieced together in a gorgeous and regal manor. An outline of bright silver and emerald withheld the mirror which was spacious enough to cover my whole body. It felt like I was almost looking at myself in HD, like somehow my tattered old jacket, painfully overgrown hair, and overall battered appearance wasn’t actually the subject of stares. In a way, it was almost as if someone had just put graphic shaders on reality; the light your pc on fire variety. So much as the presence of the mirror was almost haunting, as if it should be accompanied by a cathedral choir, my own reflection felt like a piercing gaze and a window into my soul.
I had no idea how this was possible, but I immediately documented the mirror in my journal as my first actual paranormal encounter. In the main room there was a standing table for a widescreen tv, several lamp shades, clothing chests, a miniature fridge, a large window with golden drapes, and the typical accommodating luxury items for a fancy hotel. However, I took notice of a desk, with a basket of assorted fruits and a hotel directory all addressed with my name attached to a note card.
“Jackson D. Merric.”
The letters of my name were the cheap fake-gold color you’d find at a cvs pharmacy ‘letters’ aisle, needless to say they were lifeless and not all as attractive as likely intended. The contents of the note card were a directory for the hotel, stating the hours for the bar, the pool, and the typical hotel fare. All of the text was black and white, clearly from a colorless printer, barring bright red letters accompanied by a yellow caution symbol stating that floor 17 is closed indefinitely. This was not a surprise to me, considering that the elevator had a clearly missing floor 17 button; with only a hole and the defining metallic scrapes of something torn out in a hurry. The note however meant little to me in this circumstance, or rather the contents of it meant little, because the fact that the letter was here at all was perplexing. I had only just checked into my room at the reception desk mere minutes prior, I did not have any prior reservations, so how did this entire assorted basket get here before my bags?
I knew there after that my room was just a microcosm of something much much deeper occurring within the hotel itself. I wanted to know more.
I spent my next few moments taking in the view from the hotel window, the view of the lake in the distance was admittedly gorgeous, and almost uncomfortably so. By all accounts, it really was breathtaking, beautiful trees and accompanied lucious fields teeming to the brim with wildlife, all over a setting sun. Yet, it was to me the uncanny valley equivalent of a scenic view, it felt off, like someone was just injecting that sunset straight into my mind. My moment of contemplation was interrupted by a single pound on my door. The Bellboy had finally arrived with my bags.
“Hey there!”
Nothing, he was dead silent, and his long shaggy hair kept his face from anything close to eye contact.
“Thank you! Hey, you don't have the time do you?”
I knew he wasn’t going to speak, I just wanted to see how far I could take this to learn as much as I could about the boy before me. His head finally glanced up at me for a moment, and I could partially make out the least human expression I have ever seen a person make. Suffice to say, he looked dead.
“The suns coming down you know? I just wanted to get the direct time, thanks for the basket by the way.”
He cautiously reached out his wrist to me, trembling, like he was learning how to stretch his arm for the first time. On his wrist stood an ancient looking wrist watch, which read exactly 12 pm... in the afternoon.
— I knew, without a shadow of a doubt what I was getting myself into coming here, but that didn’t exactly mean I knew where to start. Hell, initially I didn’t really know what to be looking for at all. Then, my next objective came to me by way of raw caffeine pretending to be a human. The girl before stood at what could I assume to be 5’2 with long brown hair, and slightly blonde highlights. She rocked back and forth as the elevator moved downwards, if peppiness as a concept was a person, this was her. Admittedly I was attempting to avoid making conversation, the standard fare for me usually, but when the girl noticed my journal conversation became a must for her.
“Is that made of leather?!”
“Yeah, I’ve had it for a long time, I use it to jot down my life and idea, basic stuff”
“Oh! Do you like writing too?”
“Actually yeah, I suppose so, it’s why I’m here honestly?”
“Seriously?! Dude are you kidding?”
“No I’m—
“That’s why I’m here too, this place is like a gold mine for everything that doesn’t belong to be seen by the public!”
I couldn’t believe I was having this conversation, honestly. Maybe it was just how little I planned to interact with other guests or how nonchalant and casual she seemed about this place being shrouded in incomprehensible rumors. We chatted for a moment, and she explained to me that she was headed to the library in the hotel, one I didn’t know they had.
“That isn’t in the directory right?”
“Uhm, yeah it is.” Her expression looked almost puzzled by me for a moment.
The elevator stopped on floor B1 and it revealed to me an open library, sprawling with shelves and all manner of books. How did I not know of this, and how did I never see that there were more floor options than just the main floors? The library was enormous, and straight out of some childhood imagination.
“What even are all these books? What is this?”
“Dude, are you new to this type of deal or something?”
“I’m sorry?”
“Is this the first time you’ve ever tried exploring this side of the world?”
She looked at me with one eyebrow raised and an almost disapproving smirk. She took a deep breath, gestured for me to grab a seat.
“Let’s get one thing straight, you really don’t have a clue what you’re in for huh?”
“I guess not.”
“Listen buddy, for your sake I’m gonna keep it simple. The world as you may possibly know it is filled with unspeakable horrors and tales from those who have witnessed them are outcast, and hidden from the world. A lot of the first hand accounts are buried by the government and those in power to erase any chance of the major populous ever becoming too aware of what is taking place just below the surface of our society. The written archives are stored all over the world, and this hotel? It happens to have a vast collection. From stories about park rangers discovering something unspeakable, ordinary people becoming wrapped up in something horrible, or drifters like you winding up in a place like this. What you’re seeing now is a place with only a fraction of that information withheld.”
It took me a moment to even comprehend what I had heard. I knew I shouldn’t be surprised, I spent days on end researching the Hotel Non Dormiunt. The content I discovered along the way brought me into a world I was not entirely prepared to witness. Rumors of the origins of this place, and would could have possibly led to the inception of this place. Right then and there, I knew what my next objective was, and what I wanted.
“What is this place?”
“I just told you, this is a collection of—“
“No, I mean what is the Hotel?”
“Not a clue. I’m just here for the knowledge, all of these books are free material for days, I’m gonna make so much money off of this stuff.”
Well, at least she was devoted to her goals, even if it was kinda theft?
I spent the next while of my time researching the library for any manner of content about the hotel itself. I chased after alphabetical order, passing by dates and novels of all kinds. Eventually I conceded defeat and asked the girl who was loading at least twenty books into a gym bag, for aid.
“Check the catalogues, that’s just documents, maybe you’ll find something there? Honestly, you probably shouldn’t waste your time with this, just get what you have and get out of here. That’s what I’m doing, peace!”
Paper after paper, I finally located a catalogue that stated “Hotel Non Dormiunt check in dates.” At the top of the page stood an incredibly uncomfortable date. “June 6th 1944: Check ins”. For awhile, I was not positive on the relevance of that date until I saw an annotation of the location “Normandy.” Wasn’t June 6th 1944 D-Day? The catalogue was covered in dates that made the hairs on my skin raise. Days like 9/11, November 22nd 1963, and so many more days in history were all marked on the catalogue. On those days, few people checked in, and there were few names of note. How could this even be possible, the hotel opened around these places on those dates.
How could it have moved all the way over the world, crossing continents? My mind raced with confusion. The hotel had accordingly been open even in times during the 1700s, but beyond that the catalogue has a clear tear where former dates once were. I fell back and slammed against the bookshelf behind me. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Beside the catalogue, I found a document that stated staff. Jackpot. I tried to transcribe as many as I could, but frankly the amount of staff members was somewhat astonishing to me, there was page after page with names.
Bellboy: Maxwell B.
Head Chef: Ian W
Janitor: Samuel M.
Service manager: Bryant (No last name identified)
Marketing team: Jacob M and Michael S. (What marketing?)
Garden keeper: Diana L.
Now there was a name very clearly expunged from the very top of the document, where I assume it would say “Manager”. I was left puzzled, if there were pages of staff, where the hell were they? How have I only encountered that Bellboy, Maxwell. I was also absolutely positive they did not have a garden, in fact after I gathered my information, I went back to the ground floor.
Hotel Non Dormiunt upon immediate judgment seems to have a very old school appeal. The carpet patterns are a sort of 1920s red and black checkered pattern not too much unlike a casino. I wandered around for close to an hour when I finally found it, a metallic gate like door marked with the name “Garden” marked above it. When I made my way into the garden, I observed the exterior of the hotel was very medieval based, with arching marble and stone gargoyles lining the square garden. The garden stood in a sizable square, with walls on all signs and only the sun way above , shining down into the quaint little space. At the very center of the garden stood a woman in a Victorian era dress, with a parasol over her shoulder.
She was beautiful. Her hair was a flowing red color, which contrasted well to her emerald colored eyes. Her skin was soft and youthful, she couldn’t have been a day over 20. Using context clues, I figured this was Diana. She looked composed, focused on the beaming sunlight above the garden awning. When she noticed my presence her demeanor changed, and a soft inviting smile formed on the edge of her lips. Just looking at her made a wave of nostalgia wash over me, it felt like I knew her so well already. She waved a hand to me and for a moment, I did nothing but keep staring. She gestured her hand towards the small tea table beside her, and looked at me with a questioning gaze. I was not even aware she was beckoning me until she tilted her head out of confusion over my gaping jaw.
“Do you mean me?”
Her voice was heavenly, soft, and motherly with an overall angelic posh tone. The world seemed to pause just by standing next to her, she was completely otherworldly.
“Starstruck, are we?”
I tried to speak coherent words but they came out more like a collection of syllables. Before me she prepared us two glasses of tea and invited me to sit across from her.
“Well, why have you come to the garden today young one?”
“I...I don’t really know?”
Through a gentle giggle, she spoke: “Well, do not fret, perhaps you would rather speak about the garden. Does it look as wonderful as you may remember?”
She ignored me. “Well, to your right you will see a row of roses, pretty right? On the left, my tulips, and to the right of those: lilies by the fountain.”
“it’s all beautiful, how did you manage to grow all of this here?”
“Ages of work.”
“Speaking of that, I just wanted to ask, do you know about the hotel, or where it came from?”
She looked hurt, and clutched her chest in retort. “Over there you will see my yellow carnations, lovely, yes?”
“Certainly, but do you?”
“Do you really want an answer to that question?”
“Yes, I do.”
She crossed her hands over one another and let our air through her nose. Apart from her appearance, her face seemed to wrinkle in some manner of anxiety.
“Jackson, do not waste your time with this place. You are still so young, you have spent your life alone and wandering, this is not your destination.” I started to feel really uncomfortable, a bead of sweat ran down my cheek.
“You have spent your life searching for a direction after that day, do you remember it? When your soft weary head collapsed upon that pillow and your mind conjured a wonderful world for you to stay in.”
How could I forget. The day I lost everything in only a few hours. My family, my innocence. I have long since grown from it by now, but the stress of her knowledge made a dam of emotion inside my mind break for a moment. How could she possibly know all of this, what the hell is even happening?
“How do you—“
“We’ve met before, do you not recall my face in your dreams, our garden in the otherworld of your subconscious?”
Of course I knew her, how could I forget someone like this, I kicked myself for not recognizing her immediately. My mind imploded on itself for a moment, the weight of merely coming to this hotel was happening so fast and directly, it was like I was orchestrated to have even arrived here. I couldn’t even fathom the words to articulate my terror, I was paralyzed by fear. My mind froze and a voice inside me began to scream that I needed to leave this place as fast I possibly could. My fight or flight had been triggered and it was looking to be flight as my option of choice.
“I know this is a lot to take in at one moment Jackson, that’s why I just wanted to speak about the garden. I wanted to distract the hotel for a moment, so you could escape. He sees you now however, and it will be only time until you cannot leave, so if you desire to find your answer, go and get your truth before you lose the ability to see it.”
I hesitated for a moment, who was ‘he’, and why did it feel like the peaceful atmosphere turned to the feeling of eyes watching me. I wanted to open my mouth and ask so many questions but before I could even think of what I wanted to say next, she spoke again.
“Jackson, if you dare to know the truth, you need to properly enter the hotel. Make your way to floor 17, in room 1717 you will locate a pail, collect and return to your room. Floor 17 will not be simple to traverse child; you will need to avoid any and all children you see approach you in the dark. If at any point you begin to feel a migraine you will only have mere minutes to obtain the sought after pail. Do not speak to any guests you encounter, and for all that is pure and good in the world, if you hear a mans laughter, just jump out of a window. That will be a preferred outcome” She winced and held her chest once more, the wrinkles on her face seem to grow deeper and her lively glow faded.
“What do I do with the pail?”
“Fill it with water, and douse your mirror, you saw it, did you not?”
“The one in my room?”
“Yes, you must wet your mirror and the next step there after will be up to you, so go and get your answer.” Her hair seemed to lose it’s red color, and speckles of grey formed in patches on it. Her dress appeared tattered and stained, and the yellow carnations began to wilt.
“Hurry Jackson, if you waste time, you will lose your chance, they know of you know, and I cannot protect you as I once did in your mind. You must learn what this hotel is, or rather what this hotel is not.”
I sat up from the table and turned to the door. The state of the garden was now dilapidated and heartbreaking. I could feel a lump in my throat form, I wanted to quit, to grab Diana and never let go. Yet, I steeled my will and marched on through the door. As I walked back into the hallway, I could hear the door lock behind me.

The elevator was still missing the button to floor 17, So I decided on a better course of action. When I returned to my room, it was as I left it, this bothered me more than I care to admit. It felt like the whole room should have been torn up thrashed to pieces. I knew that there was only one way I was gonna get into floor 17, and it was the only way to get to a higher floor without an elevator or staircase (serious fire code violation by the way). I grabbed my backpack and threw it over my shoulder, knowing this could be it, I made sure to bring my journal. I threw open my window and stepped out until the sill. I’ve always been scared of heights, but this was a new kind of terror. I slipped, I would fall to my most certain to death and likely be impaled by the architecture towards the bottom. I grabbed onto the nearest gargoyle statue and cautiously lifted myself upon its head.
I reached up for the window sill of 1616 and took about ten minutes to pull myself up to it. As I sat up against the window, I peered inside and had to ask myself “What in the hell is happening in here?!”. I didn’t have time to think about that, however. I hoisted myself to the next gargoyle and noticed the temperature was simmering. It caused my hand to slip and I banged against the side of the window. “Shit, sorry.” I said to myself. Finally, I pulled myself atop the hot gargoyle and jumped up to grab the 1717 window sill. I peered down for a moment, admiring that I had actually managed to climb two stories.
I knew there was gonna be only way into the pitch black room before me, I mean it’s not like there is a handle on the exterior. I retrieved my metallic flashlight, and smashed the glass as hard as I could. It cracked a few bits, and shattered after a few more swings. The pitch black room before me was beginning to become more visible. I took one step in and the steaming air immediately hit me. The warmth of the room was stunning, I couldn't discover the source of the heat, but it was like a thick mist of heat. Immediately, I could hear stirring in the hallway, banging all around. This was about to get difficult.
I began searching the room with my flashlight as quickly as my eyes would allow. The pail was nowhere in sight when suddenly all of the banging halted for a moment. For some reason, I couldn't control my stomach and vomited nearly impulsively. I knew right then and there I wouldn’t have time to hesitate, I would need to find the pail and get out of floor 17. A child’s voice began to speak to me from behind the front door.
The voice was distorted and hoarse, it sounded like several different children talking all at once. “Can you show me how to get back to my mom?”
I realized something terrible when the door knob began to turn. I charged for the door and slammed my shoulder against it, beginning to scream out of panic. That only made things worse, it attracted more of whatever was about to open that door. I slammed the lock of the door and that only seemed to piss them off more. Now the children’s voices sounded like a symphony of questions.
“What are you doing here?”
I scrambled to find the pail, checking under the beds and then deciding on the bathroom. Low and behold, sitting in the bathtub was a shiny golden pail. I grabbed the pail and raced for the window, but as I got to the edge I noticed a major problem.
“Where are the gargoyles?” I screamed. There was no down that wouldn’t assure death.
The banging on the door began to halt for a moment again, and a scream rang out in the darkness. It sounded like another group of people had found their way into floor 17. The girl’s scream was horrible, and I could hear thrashing battering the walls outside. As terrible as it was, this was my chance. I couldn’t let her life go to waste. This is why floor 17 was closed. Whatever sort of nightmare hell spawn they have running here, I knew that it needed to be exposed. I needed to find out the truth and escape. Why was floor 17 this way, the rest of the hotel while concerning was withholding such nightmares on the middle of an obscure floor. My life as a boring and simple average author was feeling like a long way away now. Regardless, I had to complete my goal all of these other people are doomed if I can’t expose the truth.
All in one moment, the banging ceased and the whole floor went deathly silent. I sat with my ear against the door for thirty minutes, just listening intently, I could not hear so much as the shuffle of feet. I didn’t want to risk them returning. I know this is stupid, but I’d like to say, put yourself in my shoes here. The hallway was pitch black and reeked; some manner of decay invaded my nostrils. I turned to my left and saw rooms lining the hallway, all with a welcome sight at the end. The elevator, I could call it and escape to a different floor. Carefully I made my way to the door, when a guttural groan escaped from the mouth of something at the other end of the hall. The massive hulking beast had fleshy tendrils in a place where I assumed it’s arms would be. It’s face was solely teeth, a culmination of human jaws.
They clacked to themselves in anticipation. The legs on the beast were lopsided and not at all facing the way they were supposed to be. It was turned towards the wall and shaking grotesquely, unaware of my presence. I couldn't call the elevator, the slightest shift of movement was enough to make it growl in curiosity. I did not know if it could see, but it sure could hear.
At that moment, room 1739 opened. The man who emerged looked to be one of those detective types, and he was followed by a younger girl and two men. They moved quietly as I did, but they would not be so lucky. The young girl among them began to whimper and cry as quietly as she could, but the creature heard it as clear as day. The detective screamed to the three to run, and run they did, barreling down the hallway. I slammed the elevator call button with my fist and prayed to God it would come in time. I knew I wouldn’t have much of a choice, it was do or die.
“RUN MAN!!” One of the men screamed to me.
I just needed a few seconds, just a few seconds and I could escape. The beast grabbed hold of the girl's leg and whipped her to the floor. The men turned back to try and help her but the detective kept running. She screamed violently and begged for help, the men were immediately slammed to the side and they began to scream too. I was already frozen in terror, but when the beast began to talk like a child, I struggled to keep my stomach in line. The detective arrived next to me clamming for breath.
“Y-you called the damn elevator?”
I didn’t answer him, I could only watch in terror as the girl has her arm ripped from her body, scattering bones and flesh onto the floor. The men convulsed backwards where they were impaled straight through the skull, they fell limp instantly. The creature feasted upon all three with it’s mouths, cackling the entire time.
The world around me seemed to pause, and before I knew it, I was dragged into the elevator by the detective. He sent us down to floor 1. The entire elevator ride down, I did not speak to him, the only thing I could focus on was the poor girl and the laughter of a man echoing throughout the hall just as the detective pulled me. When we finally arrived at ground level, I looked at the man.
“You left them…”
“They knew the risks.” He said, before stepping out, adjusting his hat and making for the foyer.
I was still frozen in place, terrified of what I had just seen. It took me a moment to stumble out of the elevator and begin my walk back to the garden. I wanted to see Diana. But I could not find the door. I was in the spot I was sure it would be in, but it was absent. A man in stereotypical Hawaiian vacation attire was walking passed with an ice cooler trailing behind him.
“Hey buddy, whatcha starin’ at that wall for…wait don’t tell me, you’ve had too much to drink ohohoh, don’t worry buddy I get you.”
“Where is the garden?”
“Oh, do they have a garden here? It didn’t say anything about that on the brochure!”
What brochure? That was all I could focus on for a moment, before I just nodded to the man and made my way back to the elevator.
When I returned to 1515, all I could do was fall into my bed and weep for a moment. What sort of nightmare am I witnessing? I did not have a clue what I had gotten myself into. But I knew I was about to find out the answer, I rose from the bed and grasped the pail in my hands. I could still find out the truth, I could get people to leave here and help all of these people. I took to filling up the pail with water as commanded. But as the water began to fill the pail, my blood ran cold. There was a harrowing laughter throughout all of floor 15. The man's laughter was heavy and booming with every bellowing gasp for air. The pail filled up, and I knew what to do. My door flew open and the bellboy had a shotgun in his hands and a look of intent in his eyes that was absent earlier.
I slammed the bathroom door shut and locked it, but that didn't deter him from firing straight into the door. I wasted no time splashing the entire contents of the pail onto the mirror. The glass began to shake like the liquid that had just touched it. It began to create a swirling motion and the mirror then became alight with a golden glow. The bellboy had just finished busting the padlock off, and I did the only thing I could think to do and put my finger into the mirror. Instantly, my entire body was pulled into another realm.

When I opened my eyes, the world around me was devoid of color. I was at the foyer of the hotel once more, but everything was grey. There was no semblance of life anywhere to be seen. Frozen. They were all frozen, the people in the foyer were paused, human statues. The world around me did not have a temperature, I could not feel anything. Was I frozen too? No, I could move my legs. I could still move forward. The world was silent. I could not hear my footsteps, or my heartbeat. My soul was in a limbo. I could only reflect at this point.
There were so many guests. So many people in the hotel, were they all frozen too? Could they see? Have I failed them? These people came here for whatever reason and have likely seen their fair share of differing events, but could they be experiencing this as well? The silence was broken by clapping. It was slow and loud enough to fill the foyer with sound. Then, he emerged. A man in a blazer, styled slick back hair and a regal appearance. He stood on the above walk away, staring down at me while still clapping. I walked closer to the man, and I noticed a badge on his blazer.
“Good to finally meet you, Jackson.”
I tried to speak, but no sound emerged from my lips, I was silent.
“Don’t bother, humans aren’t supposed to be in a realm like this, human mental understanding is far too limited to be able to comprehend the nature of a place like this”.
I couldn't tell how or when, but in a flash he was before me, looking me right in the eyes.
“I already know your questions, this meeting was prearranged the moment your soul was set free to the world by the man upstairs, when you were born I knew everything about how I wanted you to come to me.”
I did not feel alone in my thoughts, it was as if my brain was having it’s every idea taken from it.
The manager took a deep breath and sighed in disappointment.
“Alright, I set you to be here, so let’s just get to your questions. You’re asking in your head, what is this hotel? When I was born into this universal system, I observed you humans briefly for an age. You would all fail to grow, at every core of a person was a perception of the world. What one grew into, what they experienced, it shaped them into a person with a perception of how they viewed the world, what they thought was right and wrong. I became obsessed with humanities simple understanding, I wanted to see how much I could control by manipulating perception.” He pauses.
“Jackson, I have made many men kill each other by making entire civilizations believe what I wanted them to. Technically, humanistic understanding of history still isn’t wrong, wars were fought for reasons and everyone had their own pure distinctive motivations. Leaders led their subjects and followers to the next step of perception. But one day, I grew tired of watching humans fight. No, I wanted to see them at their most curious. In the olden days, this hotel was but an inn. I wanted to see how rumors would spread among you all, what you were all capable of doing. I wanted to see humans scared, I wanted to see them happy, I wanted to see humans. As simple and pathetic as you may all be to this universe, this rock in space has given birth to an almost precious attribute that humans share. It is as I said, your perception, how you all view the world you reside in. I desired to watch it all unfold.”
I could not even speak, I had nothing left to say, and it seems he already knew that.
“I knew from the beginning we would meet Jackson, I arranged your entire life so that we would finally encounter one another. Every guest here in this hotel? I arranged them all to be here, some for fun, some for terror, some for mystery. The hotel itself is molded by how one sees the world. You remember the library girl, yes? She is a dreamer not unlike yourself, so the hotel gave her a library. Your garden? You are the only one it was visible for. Diana? Just a tool for me. Every guest here is experiencing something completely different, sometimes groups share what they see. I do love a story with plenty of characters. Every action that led to our meeting today was just me guiding you along. Every single interaction was me leading your perception. You are asking yourself, Jackson, why? Why you? No particular reason, I simply wanted to see the scope of how one would react to this meeting.”
“But now, I must confess. I don’t have a plan for you now, Jackson. I know you desire to tell people to escape, so that their lives aren’t at risk. Jackson, nobody here is a risk. Everyone is meant to be here, and if they died here, it was chosen from birth. There is no one to save. But if it would make you comfortable, I would like to see how humans I have not tampered with react to your psychotic ramblings. It is ultimately up to you, if you so choose, I can take your tale; everything you want to say as it is and put it into books, I can spread the story anywhere from your internet to a local bar. It is your choice, I will not tamper with this decision. I apologize for the brevity of the events today, I was eager with anticipation to finally have this meeting be real. You may now make a decision.”
I thought for a moment, about everything I had just been told. My entire existence had been a preplanned tale for an elder god. You can probably guess how I answered his question.
“You may hate me, and I feel the emptiness inside you now, but truly Jackson, it has been a pleasure to meet you. I cannot wait to see if humans believe you, I will watch you carefully from now until the end of time. You are free.”
I awoke later, in the foyer. I cried in my hands, people began to comfort me and ask me why I was crying. I did not answer. I only made for the exit and left. The sun was shining, and it was peaceful. The world as I know did not feel like it agreed with my feelings, it likely did not. I could not know if this was a real feeling now. I took one look back at the Hotel Non Dormiunt and thought for one last time about the people in the hotel, what will they perceive? What sort of stories are being told? I will not search for an answer. I have found the inception, and I am checking out.

Short Story

Hi all,
Below is a short story I've been working on that has taken what we have seen in the streams (up to #4) and those posted by Sjin and AngoryTom (not including Mysteries.)
Please enjoy, or don't. Feedback welcome!
“Come to Mars,” The advert said, “Start a new life, on a new planet.” The advert showed a pond with a large tree next to it and several people relaxing on the lush grass surrounding it. “Meet new people, and enjoy the Martian landscape from the safety of a dome.” The view changed to people working a farm land, “Work for the greater good of yourself and your neighbours, by working the land to produce food,” the view changed to the inside of an infirmary, “Or assisting with medical procedures,” the view changed again to two people enjoying each other’s company and holding hands, “Or even help expand our population.” The view changed to an overview of several domes, “Sign up to the International Mars Mission today, and live a new life…on Mars.”
The day had finally come. The hatch to the Williamina Fleming, named after the discoverer of the Horsehead Nebular, closed behind us. Our last view of Earth was the summer sun, what little there was of it this far North, shining brightly across the Swedish landscape. The launch site, chosen by the International Mars Mission, a conglomerate of space agencies and private investors, had chosen the site as it had no previous connections to one nation or another, like Cape Canaveral, the Kennedy space center, or Baikonur did. The site was in North East Sweden, near Kiruna, which meant the launch windows were more limited, but the view was beautiful, and brought tears to my eyes. The site was originally built in 1972, primarily for stratosphere research balloon launches and low orbital launches. The IMM heavily invested in the site in early 2018 and it was finally ready to support interstellar launches, such as the Williamina Fleming, in mid 2020. A few test launches were completed and the site was running at 89% success rate, prior to our launch. We strapped ourselves in, the reclined seats, facing up. Like the original shuttles used by NASA, we were all looking forwards out of the window towards the sky. Launch was all remotely operated, nothing for us to do inside. This was mostly so the ships could be recalled from Mars once the ship was refuelled, so it could be reused. This was it, we would be leaving Earth and, most likely, never coming back. The IMM had picked the perfect site to launch from, the backdrop for all the publicity shots, footage and streams would be spectacular. It felt bad to leave it all behind, but I was excited to be heading to Mars. The ship began to rock and move, as the engines ignited. I was forced back into my chair, it was alarming at first, but the training we had received, and breathing exercises meant that as much as the air was being forced out of my lungs by the G forces of launch, I was able to overcome this and remain conscious during the whole thing. We passed from the blue of the Earth sky, into the black abyss of space and began our six-month journey to Mars.
The Williamina Fleming was one of four ships, owned by the IMM. Currently one was on a return trip to Earth, having delivered the drones, rovers and initial supplies to Mars. There was a second ship on Mars, delivering further supplies, the ship we were on and the fourth held in reserve on Earth. There wasn’t much to do on the ship during the six-month flight. All the ships were dual purpose, cargo or passenger ships. This meant everything that was put in just for us to endure the flight, was usually taken back out again if the ship was used for cargo. Likewise, anything put in to secure cargo and RC units could be taken out for our benefit. We passed the time by exercising, chatting, getting to know each other, and planning with Earth control who would be carrying out what jobs once we got to Mars. The things people forget is that it isn’t scientists and astronauts who make a colony, but it’s everyone else who carries out the more mundane tasks, such as the service jobs and catering. The twelve of us had a variety of skills and backgrounds. There was myself, Michael Wolf. I was a trained medical professional and lead medic, Ulrich Becker was the other medic, Sarah Bennett and James Fredrick were our botanists, Claire Woods was one of our scientific researchers, with her husband Steve; who previously owned a bar. Paul Gregory was a geologist, Daisuke was the other researcher, Fiona had been a teacher on Earth, and finally Fleur, Jenni and Cho who had all worked in service industries. They were mostly to fill catering or service area’s in the colony, or so we had been told. They seemed fine with this, being as they were still going to be amongst the first humans to walk on Mars.
It was the final week before we were due to arrive, Earth control advised us that the dome was finished and everything was ready for our arrival. All we had to do was choose who was going to be the first to set foot on Mars. Had we not spent the previous months discussing this issue, as well as many others, the process could have been more difficult. As it was we drew pieces of wire. Sarah pulled the shortest piece and would be the first person to set foot on the surface of Mars. We arrived in orbit around Mars, but our landing was to be delayed by a day, due to a dust storm rolling through the colony area. This could present a risk to us and the ship, but we suspect the delay was also to do with the view of the landing being obscured too much for any good publicity shots. The delay presented us with an opportunity to take photos of Mars from space, as well as Phobos and Deimos, Mars’ two moons, as they orbited around. We couldn’t see the colony from orbit, it was still far too small to see from here, but we could just about make out some of the nearby features that we would start getting to know more closely. The delay lasted around a Martian day, which we’d been instructed to refer to as Sols to avoid confusion as Martian days were roughly an hour longer than an Earth day. We received the command from Earth to buckle up and prepare for landing. There was a rush of excitement and anticipation as the ship began to manoeuvre into its landing pattern. The ship descended towards the surface before slowing and touching down. The compartment we were in filled with cheer as we realised we’d reached the surface. It was another hour before we’d all got ourselves geared up, putting on the specially weighted suits. The suits were weighted to compensate for the lower gravity on Mars than on Earth. This was in case we really didn’t settle on Mars at all, or the whole project was aborted and we were to return to Earth. If we didn’t have the weighted suit there was a risk that a return to Earth could kill us. Once we had those suits on, we donned the air tight suits that would enable us to get from the ship to the dome. The ship far enough away from the dome that the landing didn’t just cover it in dust, but close enough that we weren’t on the harsh Martian surface for too long. As the disembarkation ramp lowered, we were all gathered around the top of it. The view was amazing, a lot more barren than the view we’d left on Earth, but we could see across the dome from where we were. Way off, the other side of the dome, was the wind turbines and solar panel used to generate electricity. We could make out the Moxie units, for oxygen, and the moisture vaperators, which drew moisture from the atmosphere to create water. They didn’t, individually, produce much but enough of them could sustain us for a while. We could also make out an automated fuel refinery within the area and a large dust cloud, we could only assume was the concrete extractors. Martian concrete, for Martian homes. Straight ahead of us, from the ramp, was one of the airlocks to get into the dome, and one of the semiautonomous drones, which we guessed was watching us for publicity shots. The drones were about the size of a small car, with six wheels, three on each side each with independent steering and suspension, two hands at the front on arms, a small head at the front which housed sensors and most of the systems. The cameras were mounted on the head in such a way they looked like eyes. The bulbous back of the drone was for holding resources for transport to where they were needed, it was designed to open backwards on hinges enabling the hands to load objects in easily. Sarah looked back at us, the weight of what was to come clearly weighing on her as she took a deep breath, her shoulders rising and falling, before she bounded down the ramp towards the red surface. She paused for a moment at the bottom of the ramp, as if deciding what to say. As she leapt off the end of the ramp, we could all hear her transmission to Earth control. “It’s taken us many years to reach beyond our moon. But together, as a community of nations, we have reached Mars.” She didn’t linger at the bottom of the ramp once she’d said this. She calmly bounded her way to the airlock. The rest of us followed her down the ramp and into the airlock. Several of the drones made their way up the ramp and reappeared with the supplies we’d brought with us, which was mostly food. After we’d taken the airtight suits off, and passed through the airlocks inner doors, we were free to explore the dome. The dome was laid out with six triangles arranged from the edge to the center, segregated by paths. Three alternating paths led to airlocks, the other three led to utility hubs, where power, water and air came into the dome. Each of these hubs had a green and red light on, presumably to let us know if they were working or not. We all had other priorities over exploring the dome. First task was to claim a room in the living quarters. The living quarters were three structures, two that were three stories tall and one, nearest the middle of the dome, which was two stories. The two taller structures had large windows on the top floor, facing out of the dome, with double beds, large TVs and a large round table. There was also a single bed in a partitioned area. The second floor had two single beds, and large sofa, with a balcony facing into the dome that had two sun loungers on. The ground floor had a kitchen and utilities area for us to shower, wash our clothes and everything else. The two-story structure had the same balcony as the three-story structures, with two single beds and a large sofa, with a large flat screen TV. Claire and Steve, naturally, took one of the double beds. Sarah and Daisuke, who had been building a relationship together, took one of the other double beds. Leaving the rest of us to take the various single beds. After the bed claiming was completed we all made our way to the bar, conveniently placed right next to the living quarters. We celebrated arriving on Mars in one piece, and the IMM seemed happy for this to happen, it was a good opportunity for them to capture some promotional shots for social media and posters.
Our first full day in the dome was spent exploring. Going clockwise from the living quarters, there was the bar, then a nursery, where Fiona would be working when Children arrived at the dome, playground, and research labs, Claire and Daisuke would be working there. Next there was the farm, which would produce food and some oxygen for us if we tended it. By we, I mean Sarah and James as they would have some idea what they were doing. Next to this there was the diner, the infirmary, where myself and Ulrich would be working, and a small garden with several trees in it, and finally the open gym, which comprised of an oval track, several pull up bars and half a basketball court. There wasn’t much to do for some of the jobs, as there were only twelve of us. The jobs where we had two people were split down to half a day each, but even then, there wasn’t much to do in the infirmary, unless someone hurt themselves or became ill. After the first couple of sols, once Sarah and James had tended the farm, prepped the land and planted the soy beans, it became apparent that boredom was going to be our biggest issue. We decided that the diner would become a communal thing, with those of us that had had an easy day taking a turn to cook for everyone. In the first week Fleur discovered that you shouldn’t try to ride the drones around. Simple reason being, if Earth control was commanding the unit, it would be at least thirty minutes before they realised you were nearby and took corrective measures, which would take another thirty minutes. If Earth wasn’t in control of it, it was running automated processes and was probably running unmonitored. When Fleur came to the infirmary with a broken leg and jaw, having been swatted and almost run over by one, we had to make a rule of no riding the drones. To help us alleviate some of the boredom, from around the second Martian week, we began to hold competitions at the track. Who could get around the fastest, which pair could relay the fastest, who could shoot the most hoops from furthest away, who could perform the most pull ups in one visit. Scoreboards were left up and it was all good humoured and honest. Hoop shooting wasn’t as easy as everyone imagines. The lower Martian gravity meant more, often than not, we put too much force behind the ball and threw it halfway across the dome. We started to create new games that took advantage of the lower gravity on Mars, the only issue being that we had to take our weighted suits off to take full advantage of it. The IMM seemed concerned that we were spending more time on recreation than on doing anything productive, but the objective was still survival so they couldn’t push us too hard. Claire and Steve spent a lot of their down time in the garden, relaxing, Daisuke spent a lot of time at the bar, drinking, usually accompanied by Sarah. James, seemed to spend a lot of time on his own, Paul was the only one who seemed disgruntled because, as a geologist, he was expecting to be made use of with rock samples and so forth, but there wasn’t any need for this in the colony, as we weren’t set up to mine anything and were still in the “proof of survivability” stage.
Somewhere around sixty sols after we had landed, after the soybeans had been harvested and potatoes planted, we were woken by the sounds of several of the drones racing through the dome, accompanied by the larger transport loader, carrying supplies. They appeared to be gathering them outside our dome, adjacent to where the ship had landed. It was a large collection of assorted supplied, presumably something was under construction. We started to bet on what it was that was being built. Idea’s ranged from a second dome, to a mine. The IMM weren’t telling us what was going on, they seemed satisfied that we were finding entertainment in guessing. Whatever kept us sane was in their interests I guess. Two weeks after the drones started to gather supplies, Claire announced that she was pregnant. This led to a huge amount of interest from the IMM, they wanted to conduct interviews with her and Steve and get some publicity photos using the drones. The extra interest brought in more funding for the IMM, which meant they could send another rocket of supplies to us. It was a welcome relief, although we weren’t knowingly low on anything, we were low on meat, and since we had no source of meat on Mars, we were reliant on Earth to send some. Meat and alcohol were the only things we asked for. The IMM advised us that the supply ship would not be landing near the dome, and that the drones would bring supplies to us when it landed. But they were impressed that a baby was on its way already. This was a huge milestone for them and would almost certainly prove that humans could survive on Mars. At least in this colony, which we had started to call Primus dome, after the first Roman numeral. As the sols went by the IMM wanted a closer eye kept on Claire, any physical abnormalities or odd blood test results, they wanted to know about. But she seemed to be a picture of health. The drones seemed to have gathered all the supplies they wanted and were beginning to build the foundations for, we were still guessing, another dome. It appeared to be much larger than our own if it was, perhaps twice the size, it was hard to tell. It was another few sols before it became obvious that this was going to be a larger dome, the IMM must have had a lot of faith in us to be building a larger dome already. From what I could remember of the briefing, we still had almost ten Earth months left of the survivability phase of the colony, and the second supply craft was at least five months away now.
The weeks passed quietly, and we became more out of sync with Earth. We watched the second dome being built, it was a spectacle to sit at the diner, look out across the Martian landscape, and see the drones construct the second habitat. It was strange to think the IMM trusted us enough that they were considering sending more humans, after such a short time frame. That being said, the word from Earth control was that we were still on the survivability phase of the colony, but they were hopeful that a birth would mean this phase would be accelerated and that they could get on and get more applicants to us, people who probably knew more about what they were doing than we did. We’d lasted this long, but we still had months of work ahead of us to keep ourselves sane and alive. The dome was the only thing keeping us from freezing or suffocating on the cold harsh surface. Every so often, one of the drones would come away from the new dome and carryout maintenance on our dome. As we watched they would peel off and disappear off towards the solar panels to clear them or realign the wind turbines. It was a marvel to watch, during the down time.
Soon the new dome was built, it dwarfed ours, but it wasn’t connected to any utilities. Earth control advised us not to enter the dome as there was no oxygen or power connected. This would mean that the heating wouldn’t be on, and the air wouldn’t be breathable, yet. It was pure speculation what was going to be built, but Sarah and Daisuke were conducting research that was going to help Earth install blueprints on the drones to build bigger living quarters, or apartment blocks. They were only allowed to discuss so much with us, as these were just research projects and were uncertain what would become of them. Fleur was the first of us to celebrate her birthday on Mars, this was according to Earth time, as oppose to Martian time, but Earth control had provided extra provisions for us all to help us to celebrate. The drones rolled in with birthday cake and alcohol, which had presumably been stored away from us for this occasion.
The drones continued to carry supplies through into the new dome, structures started to take shape and rose from the ground. Some of the structures were familiar, such as the apartment block that Sarah and Daisuke had been working on, there looked like a school was under construction, another infirmary, three tall cylindrical structures, which looked like the hydroponics we had been expecting instead of the farm. There was a large structure, on the other side of the dome, which appeared to be a casino, it looked like the new dome was going to be a mixture of everything we didn’t have, as well as some duplications of what we did have. Maybe they were planning on moving us into a new dome as oppose to bringing new colonists up. Earth control were being allusive about giving us any answers regarding the second dome. It didn’t help us to stay settled as we weren’t sure if we would be moving or not, but they had built three of the apartment blocks in a row, the three hydroponic farms, the casino, the second infirmary and another bar. It was the duplicate bar that made us feel we were going to be moved. The interior of the new dome was looking better, after a couple of months, they’d constructed a lake and another garden, along with a tall cylindrical tower with a control room at the top, I recognised this as a probable structure from our mission briefing. This was a security station, so they must have been planning to bring more colonists to join us.
Time passed further and the next piece of excitement was when the drones began to connect utilities to the new dome. I say it was excitement, but it was terrifying. The new dome was connected to the water supply without any issues, but when they connected it to the oxygen supply the utility hub on our dome switched from green to red. We were experiencing an oxygen shortage. The problem was exacerbated when the drones attached power to the new dome, before resolving the oxygen issue. When the power went live to the new dome, the lights dimmed in ours. Seemed as though the new dome was putting too much strain on the power network. It wasn’t long before we started to see frost forming on the glass of the dome, the heating system must have gone off with the power. The harsh Martian surface meant the temperature was dropping and it wasn’t much longer before we all started to feel it. Our breath was starting to hang in the air ahead of us. Before Earth control would have seen this, we gave up on the idea of work and retreated to the living quarters, huddled together in one of the rooms for warmth. This was a situation we had been briefed on in case a large cold wave came through and the power systems couldn’t keep up with demand. For the oxygen situation, we’d grabbed the oxygen tanks from the airlock and were rationing their usage along with what was in the dome. The dome probably had enough air captured in it to last through the problem, but we didn’t want to risk it. It was obvious when Earth control realised they had made a miscalculation on the second dome, when all the drones raced through towards the utilities area, taking supplies and resources with them. The issues persisted for most of the night and half of the following day, when suddenly the lights all came back on and air began to circulate again. We didn’t know at the time, but we had come close to completely failing the survivability stage. Fortunately, the ship we’d arrived on was still parked outside and had been refuelled. If the need arose, we could have evacuated there. We had no idea what impact this would have had on the results of this phase. But if it was serious enough, the IMM could recall us to Earth before there were any fatalities.
Claire came to term with her baby, we were regularly growing food now from Potatoes and soybeans to corn and wheat. Claire gave birth early one morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon. We’d convinced Earth that it would be best to leave interviews and promotional photographs for a couple of days to allow Claire to recover from the first birth on Mars. The lower gravity may have caused complications that were not apparent in the first moments. News had spread quickly that there had been a birth on Mars, which not only boosted interest and applicants to come to Mars, but also increased funding. Even though we had a couple of months left on the survivability phase, it was decided by the IMM that we could proceed with full colonisation of Mars. Within a month of Claire giving birth, another ship was launched with passengers, just as the ship launched months ago arrived with meat, alcohol and other supplies needed around the colony.
Life became easier as the sols rolled passed. The new dome had taken shape and was starting to look more like a small town. The new dome also had a structure attached, just outside on the Martian surface, which we believed was an extraction facility for pulling metals from underground, so we weren’t reliant on Earth for providing these resources to carry out repairs or new construction projects. This proved to be where Paul would be of most use. As a Geologist, he would be able to extract samples and find exactly what metals were needed, and be able to study any strange rocks brought up by the extractor. He seemed to have a spring in his step, when the IMM instructed him to commence working there. Because it was outside of the shelter of the dome, there was a limit to how long he could spend out there, and one of us would be inside the dome nearby, in case of any accidents or issues. But with Pauls mood lifted, we were all feeling more buoyant about the new arrivals, due in two months’ time, but Paul wanted to establish the extractor before they arrived. He started to work double shifts, coming in only to grab some food and swap air tanks. It was concerning, but he was happy, so no one took too much notice. The problem was, when he came to the end of these shifts on the extractor, he would head straight to the bar and drink himself to sleep. I was concerned he was developing an alcohol addiction, but again, it wasn’t impeding his work and he seemed happy enough. I asked Ulrich to keep an eye on him though, in case he was becoming an alcoholic. The new dome also meant we had new facilities. We’d spread out into it and commandeered the casino, Hydroponics were setup and running, Sarah and James were doing a good job on those and the farm. Claire and Daisuke seemed to have had a falling out, they were now working in separate buildings, but on the same projects. It was odd and couldn’t have been that efficient, but we didn’t want to ask in case it all blew up and caused us all issues.
It was two weeks before the new colonists arrived. We decided to clear the air and ensure that we were all in a good place for when the new arrivals got here. We’d all gathered in the bar in the original dome. Claire had brought her chid, Brian, with her, even though he was contently asleep. The IMM had thought of everything, even the baby’s clothing was weighted to match Earth, supposing we had to evacuate back to Earth. It would cause issues, given that Brian’s birthplace was Mars. We all hoped it wouldn’t happen, but it was nice to see the IMM had thought about it. Daisuke and Claire made up, they’d fallen out over different theories on how best to recycle water, to help with the preservation of water supplies. The discussion was heated, but led to a constructive conversation and an agreement between them to allow a cool off period, if they disagreed on anything, but take things constructively rather than as an attack on their idea. Because there were only the twelve of us, small issues could quickly snowball into catastrophic issues. Because workloads were still light, we began working on welcome packages for the new arrivals. These mostly consisted of small things that we had made ourselves. Much like the Hawaiian Lei, given to new arrivals, we handmade small crowns from the flowers that had grown in the garden. We wanted to start a tradition of peace and welcoming to the colony. Even though decades old treaties had determined that no state could claim territory on a celestial body, we wanted to form our own society on Mars, that could live in peace and not be held by “international policies or disputes”. The International Mars Mission was a great foundation for this, as by its very nature it was multi-cultural and multi-lingual.
The day came for the new arrivals to land. It was strange, mostly because we hadn’t been advised that there were two ships. This meant there were twenty-four new colonists arriving in one go. Fortunately, the IMM advised us of this with enough time for us to make more flower crowns. The first ship landed, near to the ship we had arrived on. There was enough distance between them for dust and debris to not be an issue. We watched the disembarkation process from a new angle, a single drone was hanging around taking publicity shots of the new arrivals. The first of the new twelve colonists waved at us as they made their way down the ramp. Pausing at the bottom to leap off onto the surface. It was a strange feeling to know that these were our new neighbours, these were complete strangers, who we now relied upon to keep us alive, as much as they relied on us. We’d formed a bond between the twelve of us that was built on trust and knowing each other’s skills and weaknesses. These twelve strangers would take us time to build trust with, even if they had formed a bond amongst themselves, we would all be reliant on each other to survive. As they came out of the airlock into the dome, we presented them with the flower crowns. It was a warm welcome, some of them were overwhelmed by the experience of arriving on Mars and now being welcomed to their new home. Tears were shed, hugs were shared and eventually they were released to claim their own apartments, while we walked across the dome to greet the second ship. The first day with the new arrivals was spend in the bars and the casino, no one wanted to start work straight away today. With twenty-four more people to interact with, life became more complicated. Food wasn’t a concern, as the same as when we arrived, they had brought food supplies with them, plus Sarah and James had done a really good job on keeping the farm going and getting the hydroponics online. They handed the hydroponics over to some of the new colonists, who had been recruited because they were botanists as well. Sarah and Daisuke began to work and mingle with the new researchers that had arrived. Ulrich and I took the three new medics on a quick tour of the domes and the two infirmaries. The new colonists, who had been assigned to security, seemed to keep themselves to themselves mostly. Nothing like making people feel like they’re being watched and judged to build bonds with new people.
